Eugene G. Altier, age 86 of Little Canada died on December 16, 2021. Preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Patricia, his parents Edward & Isabelle, sons John and Donald, siblings Edward, Marie, Katherine Howe, John, William, and Raymond. Survived by his children Fr. Robert, Patricia (Thomas) Allard, Margaret (Anthony) Grgas, David (Susan), Kathryn (Dale) Frable, and Timothy (Patricia); grandchildren Joshua Allard, Laura Allard, Nicole Motley, Nicholas Grgas, Brian Grgas, Mary Grgas, Jacob Grgas, Larry Altier, Samuel Altier, Joseph Altier, Michael Altier, Charles Frable, Anna Frable, Jack Frable, and Bridget Tracy, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; his brothers James (Sally), and Roger (Judith).
Gene was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, the fourth of 9 children born to Ted and Isabelle Altier. He graduated from St. James Elementary school and Cretin High School (class of 1953). He met his beloved wife Pat soon after through his friendship with her brother Bob.
He and Pat married in 1957 and they quickly began growing their family of 8 children. Gene loved being a father and grandfather, and most especially enjoyed interacting with and teasing the kids. In his free time, he could often be found working in his woodshop or gardening. He was also a member of the Serra Club, Knights of Columbus, and the Independent Order of Foresters.
Gene’s longtime dream was to own and operate his own business, and he achieved that goal when he purchased a small business, Perma Seal Plastics, in St. Paul. He enjoyed getting to know his customers well and working side-by-side with Pat. They worked very hard to grow the business, operating it until they made the difficult decision to sell it when they retired in 2000. As they retired together, they moved to Pine City, MN.
Retirement in Pine City was enjoyable. Gene loved moving from the bustling city to the sleepy small town, where he could often be found riding his tractor and working in his woodshop. They were deeply involved in Parish life at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Pine City, where they were perhaps best known for their involvement with the Lenten fish fries. They stayed in Pine City until 2016 when they moved back to the Twin Cities to be closer to family.
