Elmo Romens

Elmo Henry Romens, formerly of Protivin, Iowa, passed away at age 84 on November 25, 2018 in Springfield, Massachusetts with family at his side.

Elmo, son of Adrian and Celia (Kaiser) Romens, was born October 9, 1934. Elmo grew up on a dairy farm in Goodrich, Wisconsin where working hard and love of the great outdoors and nature were instilled at an early age. After graduating valedictorian from Athens High School, Elmo went to trade school in California for telegraphy. He moved back to Slinger, WI and worked as a telegraph operator for the railroad. Additionally, Elmo worked part-time at the Slinger meat locker and tended bar at the local hotel. Evelyn Stachura caught his eye and they were united in marriage on February 16, 1957. As the family grew in size, several moves occurred and his knowledge and experience in meat processing grew.
In 1969, Elmo bought Polashek’s Locker and was the owner/operator of the Protivin Locker as a Sausage Maker/Butcher/Meat Cutter until retiring in 1983. He enjoyed playing men’s slow pitch softball, playing the guitar at Mass, performing with the Eddie’s Old Timers band, dancing and playing cards. Elmo’s quick wit, clever antics, hearty laughter and bright smile will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Alan, Glenn and Brian; sisters, Donna, Jeanne and Sandy; infant twins; and granddaughter, Julie.

Elmo is survived by his wife, Evelyn; children, Randall (Theresa), Reanne Harper (Richard), Ronald (Sue), Ryan (Sonya), Roger, Rhonda Miller (Jeff), Rajean Eldridge (Ernie), Rebecca Schwarzentruber (Brian), and Rochelle Horinek (Tom); brothers, Dale, Gary, and Rodney; sisters, Dorothy, Karen, Elaine, and Eileen (Bunny); 42 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be held Friday, December 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity cemetery in Protivin, IA followed by a celebration of life gathering at the Community Center.
