Elmer was preceded in death by mother, Hermina née Halverson; father, Elmer Bernard; sisters, Leona Sorenson and Susan Korin; brother, Bernard Kopp and Baby Granddaughter.
He is survived by wife of 56 years, Beverly Kopp; brother David (Judy) Kopp; children, Jeanmarie (Paul) Grassl, Jim (Mary Kay) Kopp, Julia (David) Bertrand, Jennifer (Terence) Ott, Joseph (Marcia) Kopp, and JoanEtta (David) Sauer; grandchildren, Jeffrey Grassl, Katy, Jimmy, Sarah, and Molly Kopp, Timothy, Lauren, and Andrew Bertrand, Jessica, Joshua, Justin, and Jordan Ott, Spencer Kopp, Matthew, Thomas Elmer, and Luke Sauer; one great grandchild, Cooper Bertrand along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Elmer was born in Plummer, Minnesota and graduated high school there. He attended St. John's University in Collegeville for two years and transferred to the University of Minnesota where he earned both a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Civil Engineering.
In 1967, he founded the partnership Bakke & Kopp Engineering, which grew into Bakke Kopp Ballou and McFarlin, which is now known as BKBM, a premier Engineering Firm in Minnesota. After his life changing health event, he ventured out as a solo practitioner with Kopp Engineering focusing on forensic engineering. Elmer raised his family in St. Louis Park and was an active member of Most Holy Trinity Parish and School.
Elmer was a leader in the community. He was elected member of the Saint Louis Park School Board and served as Chairman. He later served on the Board of Director for Benilde – St. Margaret’s High School. Elmer was a 30-year survivor of heart disease. He was a staunch supporter of cardiac research and organ donation.
Golfing was his pastime, which netted two holes in one, playing year-round—Scottsdale in the winter and Minnesota in the summer. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Beverly throughout the world. His favorite pastime … his grandchildren and great grandson, his legacy. He spent many hours going to their concerts, musicals, sporting events and school events. He was a deeply spiritual man and solid in his Catholic faith and was a strong supporter of Catholic Education.
