Ellen Adeline Blais

Ellen Adeline Blais (O’Brien), age 96 of New Hope passed away on October 2, 2021. Preceded in death by parents, Shelby J. and Maude K. O’Brien; brothers, Eugene, Jerome, and Shelby Jr.; and special family friend, Ken Kutzler. Survived by children, Cheryl (Jim) Swanson, Michael (Maureen) Blais, Kathleen (Mark) Ennen, Joyce Woody (fiancé Steve Carney), and Annette Blais; grandchildren, Erik Swanson, Andy Swanson, Michelle Shuey, Molly Reiling, Ross Ennen, Charles Ennen, Justin Woody, Jason Woody, Jason Blais, Stephen Parker; great-grandchildren, Ciera, Wyatt, Hunter, Charlie, Greta, Ashleigh, Rocco, Brooklynn, Romeo, Ray, Nicholas, Elayna, Matthew, Autumn, Alice; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellen was born in Minneapolis on December 24, 1924. She graduated from North High School in 1942 and went on to work as a medical secretary, beginning her career at General Hospital in Minneapolis. She married in 1946 and began raising her family of five children in 1947. She learned to drive at age 57. Ellen enjoted playing the piano, bowling, sewing, crochet, crafts, cooking and cards. She was the last remaining member of her group of high school girlfriends “card club” which continued to meet well into their 80’s.

Mom always put family first and had a special place in her heart for grandkids and great grandkids. She experienced her first plane ride in 1971 to Washington state to care for her first grandchild. Some remember her as “Grandma Mousey”, “Beetlebomb” or “Grandma Mimi”. Her sense of humor was priceless. She often forgot the punchline to her jokes, which made them even more funny.

Ellen was devoted to her religious faith and often donated her winnings from cards to The Church.

All who met Ellen felt an immediate fondness. A sweet, kind-hearted lady, always younger than her age-in bright lipstick and beads. She will be missed and forever in our hearts.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to North Memorial Hospice Staff and Mission Today Adult Day Program of North Ridge. A special thank you to Mary, NA. We could always expect a smile from Mom when Mary was on her way.
