Buck was born April 12, 1918 in Virginia to Anna (Johnson) and Iver Hawkinson. From the age of nine he was a summer resident of Lake 14. In 1936 he graduated from Roosevelt High School. Buck was a 44 year employee and later part-owner of Grande Hardware. During WWII he served in the Army’s Ninth Armored Division participating in the Battle of the Bulge and the crossing of the Rhine River at the Remagen Bridge.
Following WWII, he developed Hawkinson Beach on Lake 14 with his father and brother. After the war he restored the original cabin on his Lake 14 property where he then spent summers until 2012. He loved every moment at Lake 14. He and Cory entertained many friends at the cabin and often concluded the day with a sauna. He was an avid deer and duck hunter and cross country skier. He enjoyed a wonderful active life including many years of retirement traveling with Cory and friends. He valued his extended family.
He is a former member of the Jaycees, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Lake 14-Leander Club, CWDC board, Virginia Rehabilitation Center board, Sons of Norway, Virginia Historical Society and Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
Survived by his wife of 68 years, Cora; children Sally (Jack) VanValkenburg, Ann Gavin (Michael Karaman), James (Lynda) Hawkinson and David (Tina) Hawkinson; grandchildren, Katherine (Tim) Dougherty, Ann Molitor, Sam (Tamara) Gavin, Andrew (Brittany), Kari, Hannah, Eric Hawkinson; great-grandson, Dominic; special nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by sisters Marion (Jim) Smith, Margaret (Hub) Axelson; brother and best friend, Robert (Lois) Hawkinson.
In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Virginia, MN.
Memorial service will be held in Virginia, MN in July.
