Ed Anderson passed away from natural causes at the age of 91. Ed was a life-long learner, actively curious about the world around him, a critical thinker with a keen sense of humor. He was best known for his pioneering role in Minnesota’s birth of suburban retail stores in the then-new mall development in the 1950s post WW2 as the baby boomers crept outside of the Twin Cities. Hard-working Ed was pivotal in reading and understanding customer retail buying trends, beginning his long retail career with Dayton’s. He enjoyed many senior executive positions with retailers in Minnesota, Connecticut, New York City and St. Louis. Minnesotans will remember Ed as the CEO of Powers where he rebuilt the local department store chain in the late 1980s and installed the famous “Sound Wall” in the flagship location.
Ed was born in Minneapolis, graduated from Washburn High School and attended the University of Minnesota. His parents were part of the founding families at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. During the Korean War, Ed obtained the rank of Sergeant First Class and served as an intelligence officer with the ASA in Tokyo. He was always proud of his service and reflected often that the respected Pastor Reuben Youngdahl from church had visited him in Tokyo.
Family: Ed was married to Dottie Dee (Nelson) from 1955 until her death in 1979, they had two children. Ed was married to Lynn (Otterlei) Rekvig from 1980 – 2002, they had one child. His many interests included skiing, boating, golfing, sailing, in addition to football and political observations. He was well-traveled, enjoyed great food and became a cooking enthusiast. Annual fishing trips with his best friend Mike Bode and mutual friend Don Shreve were always fun.
For the past three years, Ed loved living in Elk River with his eldest daughter and preparing his famous omelets and spaghetti.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, George Allen Anderson (1975) and Nanny Arvilda (Larsen) Anderson (1993), and his son Jeffrey Allen Anderson (2015). He is survived by his daughters Christine (Junod) and Jenny (Stofer), former wife Lynn and grandchildren Martha (Matt) Junod-Hildreth, Daniel (Haley) Junod, Rachel (Anderson), Lucy (Stofer) and Flynn (Stofer). Ed is further survived by 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, December 4 at 2:00 PM at the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Ave S., Mpls, with visitation one half hour prior to the service.
