Donald John Schmidt passed away peacefully on April 2, 2019 in Plymouth Minnesota. He was 76.
Don was born in St Paul, MN on February 16, 1943 and was raised in Duluth. He spent much of his childhood on hockey skates playing through high school. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He majored in business and economics with a minor in political science and was a member of the Gamma Theta Phi fraternity.
After college he worked for Sperry Univac (later Unisys), the company that was to be his employer for 32 years.
Don married Betty Carol Ellingson on January 24, 1970 and had two children, Carine Elizabeth and Benjamin Jay.
With Unisys, Don moved to Salt Lake City Utah where he lived with his family for several years where they enjoyed hockey, camping and downhill skiing. Unisys then moved Don and his family to Pueblo Colorado, where he eventually left Unisys and returned to further his education. He attended the University of Southern Colorado and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in computer science. With his new degree Don went to work for the Trane Division of American Standard until he retired in 2006. Don and Betty enjoyed retirement by traveling the country in an RV making friends wherever they went. He continued his love of computers with a traveling IT repair business he called “PC Fixins”. They eventually settled in Savage, Minnesota and subsequently Minnetonka, Minnesota in 2017.
Don was a gentle, humorous and loving father to his two children: Carine (Brian) Lindberg and Benjamin (Katie) Schmidt. In addition to his wife and children, Don is survived by his grandchildren Jake and Brock Schmidt, Greta, Wilson and Henry Lindberg, and sister in law Roxanne Schmidt (Tom). He is preceded in death by his parents Elmer John Schmidt, Margaret Elizabeth (Cunnien) Schmidt (Craig) and his brother Thomas Walter Schmidt.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, April 5 with visitation 1 hour prior at Gearty-Delmore Plymouth Chapel, 15800 37th Avenue North at Vicksburg Lane.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association.
