Nelson, Diane Medgaarden
Age 73 of Mpls., passed away at home on August 9. Survived by husband Robert J. Nelson; daughter Maridee Dangcil (Tommy); son Mark Nelson (Kelly); 3 grandchildren Darla Dangcil, Holland and Grant Nelson; siblings Judy Laskewitz (David), Glenn (Judy) Medgaarden, Ruth Erickson, Gary (Jan) Medgaarden, Mary (John) Fraser, Lynne Medgaarden (Russ Scott), & Jon Medgaarden; numerous nieces and nephews.
Diane was a prolific artist who loved her family and all of her friends. She loved to talk and she would talk to any and everyone she met along her extensive travels. She and Bob both grew up in rural southern Minnesota on farms and they met at a Basketball game 53 years ago.
After they were married, and moved to Minneapolis, Diane started working doing in-home day care, while their daughter Maridee and son Mark were growing up. As the kids got older and more independent, Diane went back to school to study art and get a degree. She was an artist her entire life and worked in the field of graphic design before starting to teach. She finished her teaching career at the Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) where she taught graphic design for 27 years.
Diane and Bob lived in the Linden Hills neighborhood for over 50 years. They lived in two different homes and Diane did most of the remodeling for both homes. She never ran into a problem she couldn’t solve. Diane had an extreme curiosity about the world and was always learning new things, which she would then share with any and everyone! Her artistic side could be seen in so many ways – the interior design of their homes, her extensive garden including the beautiful cement leaves she created and of course all of her wonderful paintings.
She loved to teach and share all the knowledge she acquired. After she retired, she continued to teach by holding painting workshops in her basement studio at their home on Washburn Ave. Many have taken classes from her and were introduced to her wonderful view of the world.
Diane came from a large family being the 3 rd of 9 children. She has lots of nieces and nephews and love to share her artistic talents with all of them. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. Darla in California and Holland and Grant here locally.
