He started working for the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Co in Coleraine, MN his senior year of high school and worked there until it closed down in 1981. Afterwards, he traveled across the country working miscellaneous jobs until he decided to go back to school.
In 1982, Dean moved to Minneapolis where he attended Dunwoody University. He graduated with a degree in Architectural Drafting & Estimating in 1984. That same year Dean met Martha Storm and they were married on Sept. 27, 1986. They moved a few times before planting roots in Maple Plain, MN in 1996 where they raised their eight children.
In 1987, Dean took a job in the low-voltage electrical field and made a career of it. He retired as a project manager after having a stroke in 2020. He then worked on small engines out of his garage until the stomach cancer slowed him down too much to continue.
