age 93, of Maple Grove/East Gull Lake. Survived by five sons and their spouses, Michael (Emiko), Mark (Teresa), Timothy (Janet), Terrence (Ramona), Kelly (Angela); thirteen grandchildren, James, William, Madeline VanHavermaet (Timothy), Genevieve, Noelle, Colette Wunder (Jacob), Mark David, Allison (fiancé Easton Giese), Wyatt, Amber Junk (Cody), Nathan, Lucas Gallery (Nikki) and Hannah Gallery (fiancé Jordan Flores); great-grandson Joseph VanHavermaet, great-granddaughters Lela Mae Gallery, Marlee Jo and Kennedy Flores. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Janice (nee Tourville.)
David was a graduate of Duluth Denfeld High School and the University of Minnesota Duluth. He served as a corporal in the United Stated Army and enjoyed sharing stories of his travels and adventures during that time.
David was an excellent provider for his family, which took him out of town frequently. But when he was home, he immersed himself in family life. He was an avid fan of sports in general, and specifically the teams on which his sons and grandchildren played. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and served as President of the Brooklyn Center Babe Ruth Association. More often than not he could be seen hanging over the fence at one of the hundreds of baseball games his sons played, coaching or offering ”color commentary.”
Football also loomed large in the McCarthy house. During the youth football years, David would stand on the sidelines, smoking a cigar, keeping the mosquitos away from the players. He and Janice were faithful fans of the Anoka Tornadoes and St. Thomas Tommies. In his last years David was a familiar face at Providence Academy football and basketball games.
David often expressed gratitude for the gift of his life, his adoption by James and Lillian McCarthy, for his wife and five sons and for the many opportunities he had through the years of his long life.
