Daniel "Danny" Jerry Peterson, age 62, of New Hope. Passed away October 27, 2018. Preceded in death by his mother, Violet (nee Nichols). Survived by his father, Jerry (Evelyn), of Tucson, AZ; brother, Larry (Karen), of Columbia Heights, MN; nephews, Curtis (Elizabeth), of Chicago, IL, and Bryan, of Columbia Heights, MN. Daniel will also be greatly missed by his extended family, his friends, and the caring professionals who supported him in living as independently as possible for over 40 years.
Danny was the first child of Jerry and Violet Peterson, and was raised in Spring Lake Park, MN. He received special education at school, and was also fascinated by science. At the age of 17, life threw him a curve ball, which led to his being a patient at the Anoka State Hospital, where he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was discharged after an extended stay, and subsequently graduated from Spring Lake Park High School. He determinedly set out to work with his family and supportive agencies to live as independently as he could. He enrolled in apartment training and work programs in Minneapolis, and maintained close connections with his parents, brother, grandparents, and cousins. He worked very hard at therapy, independent living skills, and part time jobs.
Over the years, Daniel lived in many different group living situations, and finally was able to get his own apartment in Hopkins, MN, with the support of Vail Place, a community resource center he had worked with since 1993. He lived in his apartment for over a decade, until 2016, when he moved to a group home in New Hope.
