Colonel John “Jack” Sobraske, born 26 August 1932, died 19 May 2018. Jack attended Incarnation and St. Brigid grade schools, and St. Thomas Military Academy. He received a BS from West Point and an MS from Georgia Tech, and was trained as an army ranger. He spent 27 years in the army, including tours in Korea and Vietnam. He received a Legion of Merit for his exceptional service at the Pentagon. He served as commander of the 506th battalion, made famous by the HBO series
Band of Brothers
. He served as US commander of ARC Netherlands which prepared for lead coordinated allied response in the event of war. After retirement, he volunteered in Minneapolis as a tutor at inner city schools, as a guardian ad litem, and as a hospice caregiver at the VA.
He is preceded in death by his parents Edmund Sobraske and Dorothy Sobraske, and his brother Edward Sobraske.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Elizabeth (Kennedy), his children John (Lisa Maynard) and Catherine, his sister Susan (John) Sullivan, and his grandchildren Camille and Christopher Howerton, Alex and Kristen Maynard.
Graveside service 11:00 am Friday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery (meet at assembly area #1 - 15 minutes prior). In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Our Lady of the Lake School. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Our Lady of the Lake School.
