Deacon Clarence John Shallbetter (1938-2024)
Clarence John Shallbetter, Age 86, of Minneapolis, MN, died on November 9.
He was born in Minneapolis in 1938 to Clarence and Susanna (Keller) Shallbetter. He attended St. Bridget’s Catholic School, then DeLaSalle High School ‘56. In his teen years he worked at his father’s business, Shallbetter Better Meats in north Minneapolis. He graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Minnesota ‘60. He served in the Navy as a Lieutenant JG on the USS Little Rock in the Supply Corps until 1967. In 1969 he married Barbara at St. Francis Cabrini and the arrival of Sarah and Ann created his family.
He worked in public policy roles with the Citizen’s League, Minnesota House of Representatives, Metropolitan Council, and enjoyed volunteering with the Civic Caucus. He was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church in 2001 with assignments at St. Olaf’s and SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic churches. His legacy is in his service work in prison ministry with the Archdiocese, Basilica of St. Mary, and Greater Twin Cities Residents Encounter Christ (REC) program in Lino Lakes and Stillwater, and at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center and Red Wing Juvenile Corrections.
He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara (Wojciak), his parents Clarence and Susanna Shallbetter, and brother Joseph Shallbetter. He is survived by daughter Sarah of Minneapolis, daughter Ann (Rivera) and Enrique, and grandson Benjamin of St. Paul; siblings Terri Hawkins, Fr. Martin, Alice Holm (David) and John (Mary), and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, godsons, goddaughter and mentees.
Visitation is Friday, November 15 at Church of the Ascension (1723 N Bryant Ave N, Minneapolis, MN 55411) at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Luncheon to immediately follow in the church lower level, ending with burial at Gethsemane Cemetery in New Hope.
Clarence's family would like to express their deepest gratitude to his medical team this year, especially from the North Memorial Cancer Center and Moments Hospice.
