Clarence Joseph (Shorty) Hynes

Clarence died peacefully on January 14 at noon. He was 95 years old and living with his wife, Bernice, at St. Therese at Oxbow in Brooklyn Park.

He was a charming, high- energy husband and father, brother and son. Clarence loved the outdoors: hunting, walking, jogging and skiing; in fact he downhill skied with great skill up until the age of 81. He continued walking outdoors until November of 2020, only a few months ago.

Clarence served in the Army Air Corps as a waist gunner during World War II. It was a time in his life that meant a great deal to him.

He spent his working years as a lifetime member of the insurance industry and qualified for the Million Dollar Roundtable (MDRT) each year for 48 years. He took pride in providing people with financial assistance when they most needed it. He obtained a Certified Life Underwriter degree from American College and was past president of Minnesota Life Leaders. In 2000, we, as a family, shared with him the prestigious honor of the G. Bennet Serrill Memorial Award.

Clarence was a charter member of the Northwest Hennepin Serra Club and the American Legion. He was a past commander of American Legion Post #337.

Clarence and Bernice were married on May 29, 1948 – a total of 72.5 years. They were members of St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Golden Valley for 52 years. Both of them were Eucharistic Ministers at hospitals and for the homebound; Clarence for 25 years. His other volunteer work took him to the VA hospital, Sharing and Caring Hands, and Dinner at Your Door.

Clarence lived a full, faithful, and hearty life. Both he and Bernice loved to travel and had many adventures together and with their children, all over the world. As a father he taught all of us to have faith and find joy. He often said, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

As a couple, they modeled a true love story for the world and their family.

Clarence leaves behind a loving and close family: his wife, Bernice and adult children: Barbara Hynes-Tomczyk (John), Kathleen Hynes, Joanne Hynes (Larry Forsman), David (Renee Raming) and Patricia Bruer (John). In addition, he leaves nine grandchildren, Mindy, Erica, Katherine, Matthew, Joseph, Charles, Jack, Daniel and Ryan and five great grandchildren, Madison, Brecken, Marais, Keira and Ella. He was an extraordinarily social person and also leaves behind dear friends and extended family.

“God bless you and keep you and may your guardian angel watch over you.”
