Christa H. Sullivan

Christa Sullivan of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Phoenix, Arizona and formerly of McLean, Virginia died on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at the age of 63.

Christa is survived by her husband of 40 years, Dan Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peg and Paul Haefner. She has three brothers, Mark, Steve (Ann), and Bruce (Paula). She has many nieces and nephews and friends all over the country.

Christa was born on March 9, 1956 in Berlin, Germany to United States Military parents, Paul and Peg Haefner. She traveled extensively in Europe as a child with her family.

She graduated high school in McLean, Virginia, where she was an accomplished tennis player, and then attended Arizona State University and graduated from George Mason University as a registered nurse. She began her nursing career at Baltimore Shock Trauma. She then moved to Phoenix, Arizona and worked in the burn unit at Maricopa County Hospital. She and her husband Dan were married in Phoenix, Arizona in 1979. They moved to New Orleans, Louisiana for a short time and Christa worked at the Ochsner Clinic Hospital. They spent the next two years in Binghamton, New York, and Christa worked in the ICU at Lourdes Hospital followed by a stint on the open-heart surgery team at the Guthrie Clinic.

The next five years were in Phoenix, Arizona where she worked as a dialysis nurse at Good Samaritan/Banner Hospital. There she met her lifelong friend Madelyn and many others. She also took up golf and was a member of Arizona Country Club and a member of the Junior League of Phoenix.

In 1986, Christa and Dan moved to Minneapolis and other than a brief time in Reno and Phoenix, where they both failed retirement, she spent the past 33 years in Minneapolis. She was active in the Junior League of Minneapolis and worked at a variety of hospitals in the Twin Cities. She was a regular golfer at Wayzata Country Club and the wine steward of the annual ladies’ golf trip! She was devoted to her godson Anthony and always looked forward to the annual Christmas dinner with him and his family! Christa and Dan had a great adventure and participated in a variety of activities and trips with friends around the world.

For the past 15 years, Christa developed and nurtured a passion for horses! She was an accomplished dressage rider and a regular competitor at many regional events. She was a regular at the barn and developed a whole extended “barn family” of friends! During the cancer years, the horses and her barn family helped her get through the ordeal. In her final act, she gifted her two horses to her good friend Brianna, who she mentored and shared many experiences with.

Christa was well-loved by friends and family.

There are a few ways that friends and family can make a donation in Christa's memory. On the donation page, under the designation drop-down box, I've added "In Memory of Christa Sullivan". Donors can select this or they can tell us that the gift is in her memory in the "Special Notes" box at the bottom of the form. Here is a direct link to the donation page on our website: https://www.dressagefoundation.org/support/ Additionally, donations can be made over the phone at (402) 434-8585 or by mail to The Dressage Foundation, 1314 'O' Street, Suite 305, Lincoln, NE  68508.
