Charles Michael Schmieg, age 59, passed away Sept. 6, 2021, at his home in Plymouth MN, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Charlie was born June 9, 1962 in Ortonville MN to Leonard and Myra (Radermacher) Schmieg. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rosen MN. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School in Rosen MN; Bellingham MN Public High School; and Alexandria MN Vo Tech School.
After attaining his associate degree in computer science, Charlie moved to Minneapolis MN to begin his career in computer programming at the University of MN and then NW National Life Insurance. He went on to excel in his work at Keane Contracting, General Mills and United Health– always dedicated to working hard and providing excellence in service.
Charlie was also an accomplished wood craftsman– creating many of the cabinets and furniture for his own home and others. He was a perfectionist and his work was impeccable.
Being a favorite uncle was Charlie’s pride and joy in life. He loved to attend events for his nieces and nephews and was so proud and attentive to his God-daughters. He was the youngest of eleven siblings and all family events were important to him, especially the home cooking and reminiscing of stories with lots of laughter. He maintained lifelong friendships with school mates and co-workers. He loved to travel, golf, and memorize scripts from his favorite movies. He wrote and performed many original programs for family celebrations, which had everyone laughing and crying.
During his four year battle with cancer he was determined to make the most of every day. He met each disappointment with a positive attitude and was so grateful for everyone’s calls, visits and prayers. He continued to work full time until July 2021.
Charlie was proceeded in death by his father, Leonard in 1990 and his grandparents and many uncles and aunts.
He is survived by his mother, Myra Schmieg of Shakopee MN; Four brothers: Jerry (Melba) Schmieg of Cambridge MN, Tom (Barb) Schmieg of Louisburg MN, Leonard “Butch” Schmieg of Grey Eagle MN, and Mike (Teresa) Schmieg of Bloomington MN. Six sisters” Sister Myra Schmieg OSB of Crookston MN, Elaine Schmieg of Plymouth MN , Jean (Marv) Kirchberg of Bloomington MN, Mary (Bill) Wersch of Winnipeg Manitoba, Theresa (Dale) Kluxdal of Bloomington MN and Susan (Tim) Stengel of Millbank SD. He is also survived by his favorite uncle and traveling buddy, Dan (Eunice) Schmieg and five other aunts: Jeanne, Liz and Alice Radermacher, Phyllis DeRosier and Kathryn Karges; plus 17 nieces and nephews and their families and many, many cousins and friends.
Charlie's Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 16th at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Community, 8701 36th Ave N., New Hope MN, 55427, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The service will also be recorded and posted on the Gearty-Delmore website at the conclusion of the service.
Charlie’s family would especially like to thank their sister Elaine for her dedication and loving care of Charlie. She truly was his second Mom, cheerleader and advocate.
