Charles Addison Bassford Jr.

December 26, 1941 — October 6, 2020

Charles Addison Bassford Jr.

Charles Addison Bassford Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and dear Uncle Chunk. He passed peacefully on October 6th, 2020.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alice, son, Charles L (Duke), his wife Jen, grandchildren Isabelle, and Nathan, Sister Faye L Bosak (John). Uncle Chunk is further survived by many nieces and nephews, holding near to his heart Stanley Robert. Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ruby Bassford, Barney the rascal, and Mac the trouble maker.

Charles was a career Navy officer until Nov 20, 1966 when he was knocked overboard in the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam. He recovered from his near death injuries and was assigned to the Admiral’s staff at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in October, 1967. On Nov 1, 1967, while documenting mobilization plans with the joint military services in the Chicago area, he met the love of his life, Alice. She was polite enough, but told him his English, grammar and spelling were unacceptable for the communications being disseminated from COMNINE. He asked her if she would be available to discuss his short comings over dinner that evening. He was so enamored by her, he forgot to pay the dinner tab. On Nov 22 1967, he asked her to marry him. They were married the following June 1, 1968. Her mother said it would never last! He said he was saved from the gulf for a fate worse than death. Charlie and Alice moved to Minneapolis. He soon found there were no jobs on land for boat drivers so in August,1968 he enrolled in night school at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. It was a long 4 years for us but in May, 1973 he graduated with a Juris Doctorate Degree and began his long career as an attorney. In October, 1974, we were blessed with a son, Duke. Charlie continued to practice business law. The past 25 years were spent with an emphasis on senior coop housing. He became nationally known in the field. Over the years we traveled extensively, but Charles’ favorite destination was the Canadian Rockies. In 2001 and 2003 we were blessed with two grandchildren, Isabelle and Nathan. He retired in 2012, and we continued to travel and enjoy our adventures together. He was a gracious, kind, compassionate man who treated family and friends, as well as his clients, with love being the first constant. The Lord called him home on October 6, 2020. I will love him always and I thank him for the life I shared with him.

Please join me and my family for a celebration of Charlie to be held on November, 8th at 3:30 in the Grand Ballroom of the Medina Entertainment Center.
