Carlo was born February 3, 1941, in Warren, MN, to Casper and Eleanore Shefveland. When he was nine years old, he moved from Viking to Red Wing, MN, where he graduated from high school . The Shefveland family owned and operated the Big Elm Motel in Red Wing, and Carlo's strong work ethic began when he was 10 years old making beds, cleaning rooms, and pumping gas. He worked at various gas stations, machine shops, and Shefveland Wrecking and Auto Parts. His profession was as a tool and die guy, quality control inspector/supervisor, and quality assurance manager.
Carlo was always curious about how things worked and how to fix them. The bigger the challenge the more fun and exciting it was. Mechanical logic and figuring things out came naturally to him. When he was 16 years old, he wanted a convertible so he cut the top off his 1936 Ford. At 17, he bought a motorcycle in a basket because the previous owner took it apart and couldn't get it back together, but Carlo figured out how to reassemble it. In recent years, he and a friend rebuilt a 1945 walk-behind garden tractor so they could ride on it. They put a 130 hp V6 engine from a GMC Jimmy Truck into a garden tractor.
Carlo's greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was passionate about cars, lutefisk, lefse, Menards, engines, boats, micrometers, Westerns, pranks, and laughter. He loved collecting Red Wing Pottery including crocks and cookie jars, his large heated "man-cave" garage filled with tools and lefse-making supplies, and sitting by the fire with his family and friends.
He is survived by Diane Constant Shefveland, his beloved wife of 35 years; son Kip (Shelly) Shefveland of Elk River, MN; daughter Wendee (Trent) DeBusk of Scottsdale, AZ; stepdaughter Kathy (Lynn) Robinson of Hanover, MN; stepdaughter Christy (Greg) Hathaway of Tulsa, OK; granddaughters Mary Shefveland, Delaney DeBusk, Rachel (Brandon) Crist, Ashley (Mike Velin) Cooper, and Brittany (Austin )Kucheska; grandsons Josh Robinson, Andrew Hathaway, Griffin Hathaway, and Ben Hathaway; great granddaughter Vada Kucheska; sisters Dianne (Fred) Borgen, Coreen Foster, Nita (Chuck) Vogel, and brother Rick (Deanna) Shefveland. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be directed to Bibles for Missions Thrift Store , 4713 36th Ave. No., Crystal, MN 55422, where Carlo was a devoted volunteer for many years and enjoyed rich friendships and support .
