Carl William Gronemann
US Navy Captain, retired, passed away at age 98 on 11/11/19, Veterans Day. Carl was born on November 18, 1920 in Chicago, IL to Carl Sr and Maude Gronemann. He graduated from Lane Tech and North Park College in Chicago. While at a football game Carl met Roberta J Wolfe who quickly became the love of his life. After two years at North Park, Carl attended the US Naval Academy graduating in June 1944. Upon graduation he married Roberta on June 10, 1944.
Carl served in the US Navy for 30 years attaining the rank of Captain. He served in four wars and major conflicts. Included within his career were four sea commands. His first command, and likely his favorite, was in the Atlantic on the submarine USS Cutlass (“diesel boats forever”). During Carl’s career the family moved 16 times mostly under Roberta’s supervision.
Retiring from the Navy, Carl worked within Raytheon’s defense industry business. He also served on the Fairfax County Library Board, conducted tours at Garver Air and Space Museum and was active in Naval Academy alumni affairs.
In 1991 Carl, Roberta and son Steven moved to Maple Grove in the Twin Cities to be near his other son, John’s family. He was active in Maple Grove community activities, and volunteered regularly at the Minneapolis Airport Serviceman’s Center and conducted Planes of Fame tours.
Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Roberta. He is survived by sons John (Sheila) and Steven, and grandchildren Robert (Shannon) and Susan (Steve).
A celebration of life will be held 1pm Sunday, December 1 with light refreshments following at Gearty-Delmore Plymouth Chapel, 15800 37 th Ave. N. (at Vicksburg Lane). Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Wounded Warriors project or to an organization of your choice in memory of Carl.
