Bruce Wayne Keene, 58, died on October 28, 2017 at home surrounded by people he loved. Bruce was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor ( Anaplastic Astrocytoma) in December 2006. Alongside a series of successful treatments, Bruce continued to work, run, and take trips with friends and family for the next decade, far exceeding his prognosis of 2-5 years.
An avid runner, he completed five marathons, and countless 5Ks and 10Ks. Bruce was awarded a full athletic scholarship to run the 800 and study at Drake University, where he met his best friend and wife, Joan. In acknowledgement of the impact track & field had on his life, Bruce established a college scholarship to be awarded to a deserving senior on the boy’s track team at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, his alma mater. He also loved movie and music trivia, perusing his World Almanacs, playing cribbage, his Chicago White Sox, and Nana’s apple pie.
Bruce was a treasured son, husband, brother, father, uncle, cousin, and friend. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Keene. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Donna and Larry Wojack, sisters Alecia (Bob) and Kim (Fred), wife Joan, son Joseph, daughter Sarah (Dan), and granddaughter Mae.
Words cannot express our gratitude and admiration for the highly-skilled, compassionate care he received from Neuro-oncologist Dr. Peterson, who he saw continually over 10+ years, and the kind hospice care staff from Health Partners.
