Brian Robert Thompson, age 50 of Maple Grove, MN. Brian was born July 10, 1974 in Ames Iowa. He passed away on December 4, 2024 due to a tragic shooting in New York City. He was a beloved father, son, brother, husband and friend to many. He touched the lives of many with his wit and intelligence. He will be greatly missed by all.
Brian is survived by his wife, Paulette (Pauley); two sons, Bryce and Dane; mother, Pat Thompson; brother, Mark Thompson (Kelly); grandmother, Margaret Thompson; mother-in-law, Paulette Reveiz; Sisters-in-law Ana Lisa Haberman (Mike), Maria Reveiz, Elena Reveiz, Karime Westrum (Joel) and many nieces and nephews as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Thompson; father-in-law, Eduardo Reveiz; grandparents, Bruce and Lila Hunter; and grandfather, Milford Thompson.
Brian (BT to everyone who knew him) grew up in rural Iowa, and the values instilled on a farm outside of Jewell served him well as his career took him to the largest cities worldwide. As he grew up, BT amassed several descriptors not regularly seen together: Class President, Valedictorian, Homecoming King, Athlete, and Two-Time All-State Trombonist.
BT started his professional career in 1997 as a practicing CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, where he worked as a manager in the Transaction Advisory Services group of the Audit practice. In 2004, he joined UnitedHealth Group in corporate development, working on key mergers and acquisitions for the organization. From there, BT served as the chief financial officer for each of the three benefits divisions of UnitedHealthcare: Employer & Individual, Community & State, and Medicare & Retirement. He then took on the role of chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare's Medicare & Retirement business, followed by CEO of the Government Programs business, where he dedicated his time to the health and well-being needs of seniors, the economically disadvantaged, and the medically underserved. He was ultimately named chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021.
BT was active in the community outside of work, as giving back was near and dear to his heart. He was named Honorary Co-Chair of the 2026 Special Olympics USA games. In addition, he hosted an annual golf tournament for UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation as well many other organizations and charities.
While the roles listed above are impressive, there is another one that meant even more to BT: Father. His love for Bryce and Dane was limitless, and discussing his boys brought the biggest smiles to his face. BT and the boys frequently attended Twins, T-Wolves, and Vikings games, where their shared passion for sports led to wonderful memories. However, they could have just as much fun relaxing at home and watching the games on TV. BT's favorite rounds of golf were those played with Bryce and Dane, even as both boys began to outdrive him. BT also valued family time with Pauley and the boys. The close family unit frequently made intentional time for special dinners, birthday celebrations, holidays, lake time, sporting events, and vacations. They had a very active family group chat that ranged from the daily wordle to funny TikTok videos.
BT left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with. As a charismatic and intelligent leader, he had a natural ability to inspire and motivate those around him. His collaborative leadership style and work ethic set him apart, but it was his kindness, quick wit and deep loyalty that truly earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues. BT understood the importance of relationships, always putting others first and lifting those around him. His impactful presence and genuine care for people will be dearly missed within the walls of UnitedHealth Group and beyond.
Private family services have been held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice in honor of Brian.
