Barbara Jean Schulz, age 86, of Robbinsdale, MN, passed away Tuesday morning on August 4 th , 2020 at the loving home of Michael and Jacqueline Schulz.
Barbara Jean Peters (Schulz) was born on September 7, 1933 in Gaylord, Michigan, to parents John “Jack” Auger Peters and Pearl Laura Edey. The family later moved to Minneapolis, MN in 1937 where she graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1951
After graduating from nursing school at the University of Minnesota in 1956, she married, started a family and resided in Robbinsdale for 58 Years. With the loving help of her son Ben, daughter Patti, and close friend Michael Pham, she was able to stay in her own home for nearly her entire life.
Earlier in her life, Barbara enjoyed participating in the Christian young adult group at the Hennepin Methodist Church. She was a longtime member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) where she advocated the education of women and girls. It was also a place where she could meet new and old friends and could keep up with current events through prominent speakers.
Barbara enjoyed photography, painting, cooking, crafts and entertaining friends and relatives. Her gift of hospitality was known to all who knew her. Her home was the cornerstone for many family gatherings. She also enjoyed birdwatching from her picture window, loved to travel and take lots of pictures! She became the family historian and discovered that her paternal family tree descended from the famous or infamous Rob Roy MacGregor who led the Scottish Clan MacGregor, and according to MacGregor history, are the rightful heirs to the Scottish throne!
Barbara was a founding member of the Olivet Baptist Church which became Cornerstone church of Crystal where her love for Christ and heart for others spoke in actions. She attended and enjoyed many Bible Studies and activities there. She had a heart for orphans and fostered children and teens in her home who became her own. She sponsored several Vietnamese refugee families who had escaped persecution from Communist Vietnam. She helped acclimate them into the country and often provided resources and shelter in her own home. Many of these beloved families became her extended family and became an especially important part of her life.
She is survived by her children, Michael (Jackie) Schulz of Becker, Mark (Susan) Schulz of Kingston, WA, Laurie (Robert) Hoeft of Eden Prairie/Ladysmith WI, Benjamin Schulz of Robbinsdale, Patti Roy Nelson of Robbinsdale, Barbara’s younger brother Jack (Tina) Peters of Corvallis, OR, and Michael Pham, her friend for many years. Barbara had eleven grandchildren- Craig, Darrell Jr., Bradley, Daniel, Laura, Shari, Christopher, Rachael, Gabriel, Aimee, Emma, and eight great-grandchildren-Tennessee, Loretta, Zoe, Dominic, Peter, Edith, Harley and JJ.
She is preceded in death by her father John “Jack” Peters, mother Pearl Laura Edey, and son Darrell (Sandy) Lego Sr. (and her cat of 18 years, MacGregor).
Barbara Schulz, precious mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She left a godly legacy that will live on. She passed on the torch well. May the flame of Christ’s love continue to burn brightly through the generations.
