Adel Kamel “Marc” Hilal, age 81 of Golden Valley, passed away peacefully on August 18th.
Survived by son Jared Hilal of Maple Grove, MN; sister Hoda “Mimi” Kosseim (Alex) of Stamford, CT; sisters-in-law Siham Hilal of Plymouth, MN and Marie Hilal of Wappingers Falls, NY; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Preceded in death by parents Dr. Kamel and Alice Kanawaty Hilal; brothers Dr. Sadek Hilal, Ghanem Hilal and Fayiz Hilal.
Adel was born September 29, 1934 in Cairo, Egypt. He had 12 years of Jesuit education at the College of Sainte Famille in Cairo. He graduated first in his class and with the top test scores nationally in 1953 and then went on to study electrical engineering at the University of Cairo, where he again graduated first in his class in 1958. After college, Adel worked for IBM in Cairo for four years before immigrating to the United States at age 28. After a short stay at IBM in New York state he moved to Minnesota to join his older brother Sadek. He worked at Control Data while also getting his Master’s degree at the University of Minnesota, after which he began his 30-year career for Honeywell. Highlights of his tenure at Honeywell include work on the MK50 torpedo and receiving the prestigious Swett award for his contribution to the Space Shuttle program. In 1970, Adel met his wife Darien Wogensen. They married in 1972 and their son Jared was born in 1973.
After retirement, Adel began a second career in commercial real estate development and property management. When he was not working, Adel loved to travel and have opportunities to speak the 6 languages in which he had become fluent. In the last 20 years of his life, he and his son visited all seven continents and his adventures included making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, experiencing an African safari, climbing on Ayer’s rock in Australia, walking on the Great Wall of China and sailing the three gorges of the Yangtze River.
He cherished time with his family. He was beloved by his son, sister, brothers, nieces, nephews and their families.
